Geelong

Geelong is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, about 75 kilometers southwest of Melbourne. It sits along the shores of Corio Bay and is the gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula and the Great Ocean Road.

It's cool maritime climate and proximity to the ocean strongly influence the wine styles produced in the region.

Signature Wine Styles

Geelong is renowned for its elegant, cool-climate wines, particularly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Shiraz. Pinot Noir from Geelong is known for its savoury complexity and subtle spice, while Chardonnay expresses bright acidity with flinty minerality and texture. The region’s Shiraz tends to be medium-bodied with peppery notes, showing finesse over power. Winemakers are also experimenting with Italian and Iberian varietals like Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese, adding diversity to local wine offerings.

Heritage and Innovation

Geelong was one of Victoria’s original wine regions, flourishing in the 1860s before being devastated by phylloxera in the 1870s. The modern revival began in the 1970s and has since grown into a vibrant boutique wine scene. Pioneering estates such as Bannockburn Vineyards, By Farr, and Scotchmans Hill have helped shape the region’s reputation for premium, terroir-driven wines. A new wave of producers is bringing innovative small-batch winemaking and sustainable viticulture practices to the forefront.

Terroir and Climate

Geelong benefits from a cool, maritime climate, moderated by its proximity to Bass Strait. The region’s subzones — the Moorabool Valley, Bellarine Peninsula, and Surf Coast — offer varied soils ranging from volcanic basalt and limestone to sandy loams. This diversity enables nuanced expressions of the same grape varieties. Long growing seasons and cool nights allow slow ripening, producing wines with balance, complexity, and aging potential.

A Destination for Wine Enthusiasts

Just over an hour from Melbourne, Geelong offers a stylish coastal wine experience with clifftop cellar doors, vineyard restaurants, and scenic hinterland drives. The region combines award-winning wines with the charm of seaside towns, artisan produce, and local art. Events like Toast to the Coast and Winter Shiraz Weekend invite visitors to taste, explore, and unwind. For those seeking refined wines in a laid-back setting, Geelong delivers a sophisticated yet approachable escape.

Rutherglen

Rutherglen, located in North East Victoria, is one of Australia's most historic and distinctive wine regions.

Signature Wine Styles

Rutherglen is internationally acclaimed for its rich, sweet fortified wines, particularly Muscat and Topaque, known for their depth and complexity. The region also excels in robust red wines, including Shiraz and Durif, and is increasingly exploring alternative varietals like Fiano and Viognier blends.

Heritage and Innovation

Rutherglen boasts a rich winemaking heritage, with many wineries operating for over a century. Historic estates like Campbells, All Saints, and Morris Wines continue to produce exceptional wines, while newer establishments like Scion Wine bring innovative approaches to traditional varietals.

Terroir and Climate

The region's continental climate, characterised by hot, dry summers and cool nights, along with diverse soils ranging from red loam to sandy terrains, creates ideal conditions for grape cultivation. These factors contribute to the intense flavors and balanced acidity in Rutherglen's wines.

A Destination for Wine Enthusiasts

Beyond its wines, Rutherglen offers a charming countryside experience, with opportunities to explore cellar doors, enjoy local produce, and partake in events like the annual Winery Walkabout. Its combination of historical significance, exceptional wines, and welcoming atmosphere makes Rutherglen a must-visit for wine lovers.
